Impose pay deductions for legislators during government shutdowns

The Issue

As a taxpayer, I see no incentive for Senators and Representatives to actively avoid or shorten a government shutdown. They hold other people's paychecks and benefits hostage to get their own projects funded with no penalty to them for delaying. This unacceptable status quo must change.

In the event of a government shutdown, it's not just lawmakers who are affected. It is us, the everyday citizens, who bear the brunt of the impasse. During these periods, federal employees face furloughs, and critical services are suspended, leaving countless Americans without essential support. Yet, Senators, Representatives, and their staff continue to receive their full salaries as millions of Americans suffer due to political deadlock.

We need to demand accountability and fairness from our elected officials. A constructive policy change would require that in the event of a government shutdown, legislators and their staff face a deduction in their paychecks, or fines that increase the longer the shutdown continues. This financial consequence would serve as a significant incentive for timely and cooperative lawmaking.

According to the Congressional Research Service, there have been 21 gaps in funding since 1977, with three of those leading to significant government shutdowns in the past decade alone. These shutdowns had far-reaching impacts, costing the economy billions and affecting countless families who rely on government services and benefits.

By imposing financial penalties on those in power, we can align the interests of our lawmakers with those of their constituents. We urge you to sign this petition to push for legislation that holds our elected officials accountable during government shutdowns. Let’s work towards a system where politicians prioritize the nation over political gamesmanship. Sign now to make your voice heard and demand change!
