Implore Secretary of State for Housing to Reconsider Ufton Court Farm Development
The Issue
We are residents who have been severely affected by the proposal of the Ufton Court Farm development in Sittingbourne, UK. We love our town for its unique blend of urban and rural life, the agricultural heritage that has been nurtured for generations, and the scenic landscapes that feed the soul. All of these we fear are at risk of being irretrievably lost due to the planned development.
Beyond the personal grief, there are severe practical implications as well. Not only luck of secondary schools and GP surgeries, traffic is already a cause of significant distress for our community; the additional influx of cars if the development goes ahead would cause absolute mayhem, adding to the strain. The development also proposes the repurposing of integral agricultural land, which carries far more lasting impacts. These trees produce thousands of apples and pears which are sold to supermarkets.
According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the UK has lost 97% of its wildflower meadows since the 1930s (source: DEFRA), diminishing both our country’s agricultural output and biodiversity. This development would only further exacerbate this alarming trend.
The orchard is also home to numerous species of wildlife including badger setts which they have started to fill in. Badgers and their setts are protected by the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. The developers would have to demonstrate biodiversity net gain which will be tricky as they’re turning the orchard into a huge housing estate.
As citizens deeply invested in the welfare of Sittingbourne and its unique character, we thereby urge the council to reconsider the appeal of this development. We believe that focusing on sustainable solutions will benefit us collectively – now and for generations to come.
Please stand with us, sign the petition and help us preserve our town’s invaluable heritage.
