Implore Government to Address Spray Foam Insulation Effects on Home Sales
Implore Government to Address Spray Foam Insulation Effects on Home Sales
The Issue
I am writing this petition as one of the hundreds of thousands of homeowners who are financially burdened by the unforeseen consequences of spray foam loft insulation. As we took the government's advice, enticed by their endorsement and the grants offered to installers, whether or not we were able to avail ourselves of those grants, we never expected to face significant hurdles when it came to selling our homes. We believed that if the government was giving grants to companies to install foam spray insulation, it was a tried a tested energy saving method of reducing heat loss from our homes. However, we now find ourselves in a catch-22 situation. We either leave the insulation in place and face being unable to sell our properties, or spend a considerable sum we can ill-afford to have it removed.
Though spray foam insulation is promoted as an energy-efficient choice, it has become a stumbling block for homeowners. Evidence suggests that homes with this type of insulation are almost impossible to sell due to concerns about condensation, mould, and difficulty in detecting roof damage (Crawford, 2020). Unfortunately, this issue affects a significant number of people; in 2014 alone, around 300,000 homes had foam insulation installed in the UK (DECC, 2014).
Astonishingly, although spray foam insulation has now been removed from the Government's Great British Insulation Scheme due to their own concerns about the risk of damp and mould penetrating the roof timbers, the foam is still being sold to unsuspecting customers.
We implore the government to acknowledge this issue. We seek fair solutions that do not financially penalize homeowners who trusted in government-backed schemes. It is time for change.
Please support us by signing this petition. Stand with the thousands of homeowners affected by this issue and let us bring about the much-needed change together.
