Implicit bias and ignorance in police force
Implicit bias and ignorance in police force
The Issue
Over the years, police brutality in America has been a very occurring issue. What do many of the police brutality stories heard on the news have in common? The people getting abused by the police officers are often of color, or non Americans.
Police brutality towards people of color should definitely come to an end. As stated by the University of Illinois, “Black males comprise 6.1 percent of the total U.S. population but approximately 25 percent of all persons killed by law enforcement.” This statistic alone should open everyone’s minds to the fact that this is a very ongoing problem and it must stop now.
Police brutality based on race must come to an end immediately, which is the reason I am creating this petition. As explained in the Harvard Gazette, racial inequalities in policing is majorly due to implicit bias, and past actions that may alter how some people think and view people of color. I also believe this issue is caused by some sort of ignorance by some police officers.I believe that police brutality towards people of color is due to police officers being extremely ignorant.
I am creating this petition with a goal to make people aware of the issue, as well as understand that we can make a change into fixing this horrible issue. One way to work towards solving this issue, stated by Brady United is, Improve training and oversight of active police officers by requiring annual de-escalation and meaningful anti-bias training that take into account existing societal and cultural prejudices. I also believe increased psychological training for police officers could be helpful towards fixing this issue.
Help me and the community in signing this petition and making an end to police brutality.
