Implementing More Safe Injection Sites across the US and World

The Issue

Safe injection sites are facilities where people who use drugs can inject or consume drugs under the supervision of trained medical professionals. These sites offer a range of services to drug users, including clean needles, sterile supplies, and medical care, all in a safe and controlled environment. Here are some reasons why safe injection sites are a good thing:

  • Reduce the risk of overdose: Safe injection sites provide a safe and controlled environment for drug use, reducing the risk of overdose and death. Trained medical staff can also intervene quickly if an overdose does occur, potentially saving lives. There is about 1 overdose at a SIS per 1000 injections but no fatal overdoses have been reported.
  •  Improve public health: Safe injection sites can help prevent the spread of diseases like HIV and hepatitis C by providing sterile injection equipment and promoting safe injection practices. (About 6 to 57 HIV infections per year are prevented by the SIS) They also help reduce the amount of discarded needles and other drug paraphernalia in public places.
  • Increase access to treatment: Many safe injection sites also offer addiction treatment and other health services, which can help drug users access the support they need to overcome their addiction and improve their overall health.

Despite their benefits, safe injection sites continue to face significant opposition from some members of the community. There are concerns that these sites will increase drug use or crime in the surrounding area. However, research has shown that these concerns are not supported, and that safe injection sites can actually improve public safety by reducing the number of discarded needles and providing medical care to those in need.

By signing my petition to encourage the implementation of safe injection sites in major cities across the US and the world, you can help raise awareness of the benefits of these facilities and demonstrate support for their implementation. This can help break down political and regulatory barriers and make it easier for safe injection sites to be established in communities that need them.
