Implement universal ADHD screening to all kids in school.

Implement universal ADHD screening to all kids in school.
The Issue
I've personally witnessed the profound difference that an early diagnosis of ADHD can make in a child's life. My journey has shown me the reality of two paths: one where early diagnosis and support transformed a child's educational experience for the better, and the other where delayed detection led to negative long-term outcomes. This experience underscores the critical need for a universal ADHD screening tool, especially during Primary 4, to ensure an effective support system is in place.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects roughly 5-7% of school-aged children globally, yet many children go undiagnosed until later in life, which poses significant risks to their educational performance, mental health, and overall quality of life. In the UK, statistics show that ADHD is underdiagnosed, and awareness among educators often lacks, leading to missed opportunities for early intervention.
By implementing a universal screening tool for ADHD during Primary 4 across all mainstream schools, we can identify students who may benefit from additional support early on. Early diagnosis can be instrumental in ensuring children are not left behind in their education. With proper guidance and resources, children with ADHD can reduce the risk of educational failure, social isolation, low self-esteem, and subsequent mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
Denmark and some states in the United States have successfully integrated ADHD screening in their school systems, demonstrating a positive turnaround in educational and behavioral outcomes for young students. Let's follow their lead and give every child the best opportunity to succeed.
Ensuring early identification and resources for children with ADHD is not just beneficial, it is necessary for fostering a healthier, more inclusive educational environment. It's time for authorities and policymakers in the UK to take action and introduce mandatory ADHD screening tools in Primary 4. This initiative will require collaboration between health authorities, education professionals, and policymakers to develop and implement an effective, inclusive, and non-discriminatory screening process.
Please sign this petition to urge the Department for Education to recognize the essential role of early ADHD screening and secure a brighter, more equitable future for all students.
