Implement Transparent Denial Reasons and Oversight for Inmate Commutations

Implement Transparent Denial Reasons and Oversight for Inmate Commutations

The Issue

The current system of inmate commutation denials lacks transparency, often leaving inmates without a clear understanding of the reasons behind their denial. This lack of clarity can hinder the rehabilitation process and erode trust in the justice system. We are calling for detailed explanations to be provided for each commutation denial, complete with supporting evidence. Additionally, we believe that oversight of community corrections and the board of parole should be conducted by an independent organization outside of the existing chain of command. Such an organization would serve both community interests and those of inmates' families, ensuring fairness in decision-making processes.

Furthermore, recognition and acknowledgment should be given to inmates who have shown evidence of rehabilitation during their incarceration period. An appeal process that allows these individuals to demonstrate their rehabilitative actions is crucial in promoting positive change within our prison system.

According to data from The Sentencing Project (2018), there is a direct correlation between increased transparency in parole decisions and reduced recidivism rates among released prisoners - highlighting the importance our petition holds.

We urge you to support this call for transparency, accountability, and fairness within our criminal justice system by signing this petition today.
