As a resident of St. Mary's County, I drive daily on the roads that have become a constant source of fear and anxiety for our community. The intersection of Route 234 and Mechanicsville Road in Mechanicsville, MD has been the site of numerous accidents, fatalities, near misses, etc., happening on a weekly basis if not more often. It is appalling that this situation has not been addressed previously.

Our plea is to St. Mary’s County Commissioner’s office, the Planning Commission, our local Department of Transportation as well as The Maryland Department of Transportation to take immediate action towards improving safety at this intersection. A traffic light or roundabout is desperately needed to regulate traffic flow and prevent further accidents.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), intersections are responsible for over 50% of all injury-related road incidents in urban areas across America - an alarming statistic that highlights the urgency for intervention at our own dangerous crossroads.

We cannot wait until another life is lost or another family shattered before we act. We demand immediate attention be given to this pressing issue; it's time we prioritize safety over convenience.
