On the evening of Sunday, August 2, tragedy struck on the B1281, at Hesleden Road, near Hardwick Hall Manor, Blackhall Colliery. Officers were called just before 7:15 PM to a devastating collision involving a Volkswagen Passat and a Citroen C3, both travelling in opposite directions. The accident claimed the life of Lucas, the driver of the Volkswagen, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Lucas was not just a driver that evening; he was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, boyfriend, and friend to many. His passing has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
The stretch of the B1281 where this accident occurred is notorious for high speeds and insufficient road markings and signage that fail to alert drivers to reduce speed. There is an urgent need for enhanced traffic calming measures to prevent further such tragedies. Speeding and inadequate signage have been ongoing issues that many have witnessed but gone unaddressed.
Traffic calming measures such as improved signage, road markings, and possibly speed bumps or chicanes could significantly reduce the likelihood of future accidents.
