As a concerned parent and resident of Waterford, Wisconsin, I can no longer overlook the inherent risks our children are exposed to every day. Our community hosts three critical schools: Evergreen Elementary, Fox River Middle School, and Waterford Union High School, all of which are nestled perilously on busy Highways 83/20. The absence of proper, functioning traffic and crossing lights at the intersections the student cross to/from school exposes our children to the dangerous flow of semi-trucks, construction vehicles, box trucks, delivery vehicles, and personal vehicles that frequent these sections of the highway throughout the day.

My fears are not unfounded - I have two children who have been minorly hit by a vehicle on this stretch of road and just last night, a student was found lying in the road after being hit post-wrestling practice. Our children should not have to risk their lives traveling to and from school and extracurricular activities.

Every child should have access to a safe route to School. Statistics show that incidents of pedestrian injury decrease dramatically with the implementation of safety measures such as traffic and crossing lights (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). I, therefore, petition the state of Wisconsin to install traffic and crossing lights on highways 83/20 at Racine St, and crossing lights at Rivermoor Dr, Center St, and Water St. This measure will ensure the safe movement of our children at all different hours of the morning, afternoon and evening.
