The Issue
I am a survivor of domestic abuse, having lived through the terrifying experience multiple times. Despite the promises made by the existing support systems, I often found myself left in the dark during some of my most vulnerable moments. Critical information like bail conditions and case progress was not communicated to me. These gaps in the safety net left me feeling unsafe and unsupported while attempting to ensure the protection of myself and my children.
The pain and challenges I have faced as a consequence of these oversight have fuelled my determination to advocate for a systematic transformation, starting with our education system. We must act proactively to prevent future generations from enduring similar hardships, and the key to prevention is education.
The Domestic Abuse Awareness and Education in Schools Act (DAESA) is a vital legislative initiative that aims to mandate comprehensive and age-appropriate education about domestic abuse, healthy relationships, coercive control, and emotional wellbeing in all secondary schools across the UK. We intend to target students aged 13–14, as early education can play a crucial role in shaping perceptions and breaking cycles of abuse.
Statistics indicate that a third of all domestic violence starts in teenage relationships. Introducing DAESA into the national curriculum ensures that students are informed and prepared to recognise unhealthy patterns and behaviours, thus safeguarding their future relationships. Other countries, such as Canada and Australia, have implemented similar educational programs with notable success, illustrating the impact of proactive measures.
Addressing domestic abuse through education empowers young minds to create cultural change. For every misguided notion eradicated, we are planting seeds for a safer society. This act will not only help those directly affected by abuse, but it will also nurture a generation capable of fostering respectful and supportive interactions across all walks of life.
I urge members of parliament and the education authorities to act in favour of this crucial initiative. By signing this petition, you can support a future where students are equipped with the knowledge and resilience to face challenges assertively, understanding the dynamics of healthy relationships and recognizing the red flags of abuse.
Please sign this petition to help pass the Domestic Abuse Awareness and Education in Schools Act and ensure a safer environment for our children, starting with the education they deserve.
