The Issue

For graduating seniors who have dedicated efforts to regularly donating blood, it is about more than just a civic duty; it’s about making a tangible impact in our community and potentially saving countless lives. As residents of Columbia County, Georgia, we have seen firsthand the importance of community service and volunteerism. It is time to acknowledge and honor these selfless acts by implementing the Red Cord Program in our school district.

The Red Cord Program is a respected initiative in many educational institutions across the country, rewarding students who have donated blood multiple times during their high school years with a red honor cord to wear during their graduation ceremony. This public recognition is not just a symbol of compassion; it fosters a culture of giving and community awareness among students. In our county, where community engagement is cherished, introducing this program will further instill the values of empathy and civic responsibility in the younger generation.

Statistics from the American Red Cross highlight that every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and one donation can potentially save up to three lives. Many other counties and states have adopted similar recognition programs because they acknowledge that students who start donating in high school are likely to continue this lifesaving habit into adulthood.

Incorporating the Red Cord Program would require minimal resources from the school district, but the payoff in terms of lives saved, and community involvement would be immense. Schools can partner with local blood banks and organizations to ensure students have the opportunity to participate consistently. Additionally, the implementation of the program would set a precedent for encouraging more volunteer activities within schools.

By honoring our students with this recognition, Columbia County School District will not only boost school spirit and unity but also stand as a pioneer in fostering lifelong volunteer habits and saving lives. Please join me in calling on our district leaders, local education boards, and all stakeholders to prioritize this initiative.

Sign this petition to support the implementation of the Red Cord Program in our schools and help us celebrate the spirit of community service and lifesaving acts by our youth. Every signature counts.
