Implement the A+ After School Program at Fort Shafter Elementary

Implement the A+ After School Program at Fort Shafter Elementary
The Issue
As an active-duty military parent, I have personally faced challenges in finding adequate after-school care outside of the base. Our beloved Fort Shafter Elementary serves many military children of brave service members, yet it currently lacks a comprehensive after-school program, such as the A+ program offered in Hawaii. Due to limited space at the on-base school-age services, many parents are left without suitable care options for their children after school hours. Often, the waiting list for these services can exceed six months, depending on a service member’s family category, leaving families in a difficult position while they wait for care.
The impact of such long waiting lists is significant:
- Increased Stress for Parents: Parents struggle to balance their work responsibilities with the uncertainty of after-school care arrangements. This can lead to heightened stress and anxiety as they navigate professional obligations while worrying about their children's safety and well-being. Limited options force parents to scramble for alternative childcare solutions that may not be as reliable or suitable.
- Impact on Children's Well-Being: Without access to after-school programs, children may be left unsupervised for extended periods, which can lead to feelings of isolation and anxiety. They miss out on valuable opportunities for social interaction, learning, and academic support that structured programs provide.
The A+ program has proven successful in numerous schools across the island, providing essential support for students and families alike. Studies have shown that access to after-school programs results in better academic performance, improved behavior, and increased attendance (American School Board Journal, 2015). Implementing a program like A+ at Fort Shafter Elementary would not only enhance our children's educational experiences but also bring peace of mind to military parents, allowing us to focus on our responsibilities while knowing our children are in a safe and supportive environment.
We are calling on the administration to implement the A+ program at Fort Shafter Elementary. This initiative is not just about convenience; it’s about ensuring our hardworking military families receive the support they need, right where they need it.
Please sign and support our petition to provide our children with the additional care they deserve and give our parents peace of mind while at work. Thank you for your support!
