Implement Stronger Penalties for Domestic Violence Offenders and Accomplices

The Issue

In 2020, a young woman named Katie Simpsons life was tragically taken to the brutality of a domestic abuse situation. Katie had been suffering under the coercive and controlling dominance of her sister's long-term partner from the age of 9. Despite his well-documented history of domestic violence and jail sentences, this dangerous individual was permitted bail. The justice system tragically failed Katie when the man who tormented her life took his own, one day into his trial. Adding to this sorrow, the three women who protected him were spared incarceration and left the courtroom with suspended sentences.

The course of events that led to Katie's premature death highlights the egregious lapses in our current legal processes. This case demonstrates a horrific example for the public and for the young generation raised within an environment of violence. It sends a terribly poor message to victims that they might continue suffering without justice being served.

Records show a disturbing trend in domestic violence case outcomes. Data from the Office for National Statistics show that between 2018 and 2019, more than half (248,933) of domestic abuse cases resulted in no further action against the perpetrator.

We need to instigate change. We need stricter penalties for domestic violence offenders. But more than that, we need severe consequences for those who actively shield these criminals. No one should be allowed to walk away from such heinous crimes with a suspended sentence.

We, therefore, urge UK lawmakers to review and restructure domestic violence legislations, ensuring stricter penalties for offenders and their accomplices.

Let us honour Katie's memory with action.

Let us strive to ensure that no more lives are torn apart by this terrible violence.

We need this change, now.

Sign this petition and stand for justice, for Katie, and for all victims of domestic violence.
