The Issue

Enhancing the safety of our community is a cause close to my heart, especially when it comes to ensuring that only trusted individuals receive door-to-door sales permits. Livingston County, known for being one of the fastest growing counties in Michigan, also deserves to be a place where residents and visitors can roam without fear. Unfortunately, the current process for granting sales permits lacks the rigorous checks necessary to screen applicants effectively. This gap in due diligence can sometimes allow individuals with malicious intent to slip through the cracks, leading to preventable crimes and undermining the community's trust.

Statistics show that areas with stricter permit regulations tend to experience a noticeable decrease in illicit activities. For instance, counties that have enforced comprehensive background checks and robust application procedures have reported fewer instances of fraud and unlawful business operations. Livingston County could similarly benefit by revisiting and tightening its permit issuance framework. Ensuring that every individual granted a sales permit passes a thorough vetting process would deter those with malevolent intentions from exploiting our county’s open markets.

What we propose is clear: Implement a system that includes detailed background checks, cross-referencing with local law enforcement, and continuous monitoring of permit holders. This would not only elevate the integrity of our local economy but also protect the safety of our citizens. By analyzing successful models from other cities and counties, Livingston can adopt an innovative approach that assures growth while safeguarding its community.

The time to act is now. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Liv Co should be a top priority, and with your support, we can urge our local leaders to make these necessary improvements. Together, let's stand for a more secure and trustworthy county.

Dear Livingston County Residents, Thank you for sharing concerns about stricter vetting for door-to-door sales permits in Livingston County. These matters are determined at the city, township, or village levels of government and are not regulated at the county level. County government does not issue solicitor permits and Michigan law does not grant counties the authority to regulate door-to-door soliciting via county ordinance. However, many local jurisdictions do issue such permits and efforts to encourage different procedures are best shared with your city, township, or village officials. You can find a list of local offices here. Sincerely, Nathan Burd Livingston County Administrator
