The Issue

Two personal stories have ignited this call to action. My uncle, who held the respected title of Chief of Police, was found to be abusing and neglecting his own mother - my grandma. Despite a documented investigation that revealed his wrongdoings, he was allowed to keep his badge and continue patrolling a city as a police officer. An equally painful incident occurred when an investigator yelled at my 9-year-old child and caused great distress. This officer remains on duty.

These stories underscore a systemic problem. Law enforcement officers, who are meant to protect and serve the public, are not held to a high enough standard of accountability. This is not an isolated issue; it is mirrored across Alabama and throughout the United States.

This petition calls on Alabama’s Legislature to establish stricter guidelines, transparency, and higher levels of accountability for those in law enforcement positions, much like the licensing requirements that exist for healthcare professionals. We propose rigorous assessments not only of their professional capabilities but also of their moral compass and attitudes, to prevent further harm befalling our youth, elderly, and vulnerable citizens.

Our initiative seeks to replace the existing “good boy system,” that often allows erring officers to simply switch departments, with transparent evaluation processes that prioritize the safety and well-being of our public.

Let’s take decisive action to rectify this issue, foster safer interactions between law enforcement officers and the public, and ensure our peacekeepers live up to the oaths they take. Sign this petition to stand with us and drive the change we wish to see.
