Implement Stricter Requirements for Elected Service Officials

Implement Stricter Requirements for Elected Service Officials
The Issue
A Petition for Government Reform: Restoring Integrity and Representation
From a citizen deeply frustrated with the ongoing affairs in Washington D.C., this petition demands reform in the interest of the average American. For too long, our elected officials have operated in a system that rewards special interests and personal gain rather than true public service. It is time for stricter requirements that ensure accountability, transparency, and genuine representation.
Proposed Reforms:
1. Fair Compensation for Public Service:
1a. Elected officials should earn only the mode (most common) income of American citizens, ensuring their pay reflects what the majority of working people actually earn. This prevents high-income outliers from distorting the salary standard and reinforces the idea that public service is not a get-rich-quick scheme.
1b. Given the high cost of living in Washington D.C., a basic apartment building designated for congressional members should be provided.
2. Age Limit for Politicians:
2. To ensure a government that is representative of all generations, there should be an age limit of 65 for holding office.
2a. The current average age of Congress members is significantly higher than the national average, limiting fresh perspectives and innovation in governance.
3. Transparent Party Affiliation Changes:
3a. Elected officials who wish to change their party affiliation must receive approval through a voting process.
3b. This ensures transparency and upholds the integrity of their commitment to their constituents’ values.
4. Ending Political Mud-Slinging:
4a. Public servants who engage in baseless attacks, misinformation, or divisive rhetoric will face fines.
4b. Elected officials should focus on solutions, not distractions that create greater division among Americans.
5. Blind Trusts & Insider Trading Monitoring:
5a. Politicians must place all investments in blind trusts to eliminate conflicts of interest and prevent personal financial gain from policy decisions.
5b. All investments of close friends, associates, and government officials will be monitored for insider trading. This includes investments made by family members, business partners, and political allies to prevent unethical financial dealings.
5c. Any government official caught engaging in or benefiting from insider trading will face immediate removal from office, prosecution, and a lifetime ban from holding any public position.
6. No Lifetime Salaries:
6a. Once out of office, Congress members will no longer receive taxpayer-funded income.
6b. Public service should not come with lifelong financial benefits at the expense of the people.
7. Prohibiting Lobbying & Mandatory Transparency for Meetings with Special Interests:
7a. Lobbying by corporations, non-profits, and any other interest groups is strictly prohibited.
7b. All meetings between government officials and any corporations, non-profits, or special interest groups must be documented and summarized for the public record.
7c. Meeting summaries must include the date, time, attendees, topics discussed, and any agreements or promises made. This information will be made accessible in real-time to prevent backdoor deals and undue influence over legislation.
8. One Issue Per Bill: Legislation must be focused and transparent.
8a. Bills should only include provisions related to a single issue, eliminating the practice of inserting unrelated items that cater to special interests.
8b. This will ensure laws are clear, accountable, and truly representative of the people’s needs.
9. Transparent Campaign Donations & Strict Campaign Finance Limits:
9a. No corporations, businesses, or PACs may donate to political campaigns or political parties.
9b. PACs may not interfere with elections through donations, advertisements, or other financial means.
9c. Individual donations to a campaign, political party, etc. are capped at $20K annually.
9d. No gimmicks or financial incentives to register voters—such as billionaires offering large sums of money in exchange for voter registration —will be permitted. Democracy should be based on informed civic participation, not financial influence.
9e. All campaign contributions must be publicly disclosed in real-time to ensure transparency and prevent undue influence in elections.
We demand the implementation of these essential reforms. This is not just about accountability—it is about restoring trust in our government and ensuring it serves all Americans, not just the privileged few.
