I am one of the many people who have experienced severe side effects from fluoroquinolones antibiotics, specifically ciprofloxacin. These medications can cause serious issues involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and even lead to neurotoxicity and mitochondrial toxicity. This is not a rare occurrence; in New Zealand alone, ciprofloxacin is prescribed 35,000 times per year with data suggesting that up to 35 people will be seriously affected.

The health implications are severe and life-altering for those affected. Despite this alarming reality, the ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation), Medsafe (New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority), doctors nationwide and the Ministry of Health have yet to take sufficient action.

We cannot stand by while these harmful side effects continue to impact lives. It's time for stricter regulations on fluoroquinolones antibiotics including ciprofloxacin. We call upon our healthcare authorities to review their policies regarding these drugs and implement necessary changes immediately.
