Implement Stricter Motorcycle Helmet Laws in Ohio

The Issue

As a family personally affected by motorcycle accidents, we know the pain and loss that can result from these incidents. My son, nephew, and I have all been involved in motorcycle accidents. Tragically, my son was charged with vehicular manslaughter following an accident that wasn't even his fault. If the other rider had been wearing a helmet and not speeding, he would still be alive today.

In Ohio alone, lack of helmet use is the leading cause of fatal accidents among motorcyclists. Yet while it's mandatory to wear seat belts in vehicles at all times for safety reasons, there's no such requirement for motorcyclists to wear helmets at all times.

This disparity in our laws doesn't make sense when considering that helmets are about 37% effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67% effective in preventing brain injuries according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It's time for change.

We urge lawmakers to revise Ohio's laws regarding motorcycle helmets. We need stricter regulations requiring all riders to wear helmets at all times on the road - not just for their safety but also for everyone else on the roadways.

Please sign this petition if you agree that it's time we take action against preventable deaths caused by lack of helmet use among motorcyclists in Ohio.
