Implement stricter background checks to keep All Sex offenders from trusted roles

The Issue

We, the citizens of The United States of America, are calling for stringent laws that would prevent convicted sex offenders from serving in public safety and/or service roles such as, but not limited to firefighters, search and rescue teams or organizations and emergency medical technicians ( EMT).These paid and volunteer positions require a high level of integrity, trust and responsibility to the communities in which they serve, proven qualities a sex offender does not possess. It is, therefore crucial to ensure those who fill these roles have no sexual crime offenses.

This petition is born out of a deeply personal experience. As a survivor of sexual abuse, I, along with countless other survivors, have experienced the devastating impact these offenses. It s our firm belief that no convicted sex offender should hold paid or volunteer positions of trust within The United States.

In the United States alone, there are over 900,000 registered sex offenders (per National Center for Missing and Exploited Children).  There are additional convicted sex offenders not required to register or their required registration has expired. In addition, there are convicted sex offenders living under aliases, negate to register and move freely from state to state. Even more concerning are the amount of sex crimes in which  DNA or fingerprints are held as evidence, but  no identification made. These facts alone prove it is imperative and with extreme urgency that legislation be enacted to secure the safety of all our citizens from sexual predators.

By passing new legislation or amending The United States, current sex offender law, an additional layer of protection will be provided for our children and other vulnerable citizens. This is not about added punishment, it is ensuring public safety.
