As a Criminologist and Medicolegal Death Investigator, I've witnessed the horrifying outcomes of domestic violence far too many times; outcomes that could have been prevented with strict and decisive Legal Practices. A pressing issue among these is the need for strict sentencing for strangulation that occurs in domestic violence cases. 

Strangulation is a horrific form of abuse, which puts the victim in the dire circumstances. Its addition to an existing environment of domestic violence exponentially increases the likelihood of death for the victim, as breath and life are literally taken away at the hands of the abuser. Yet, the severity of this crime is often overlooked in our Justice System, creating a terrifying loophole for Offenders.

As per the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention, non-fatal strangulation is a significant predictor for future lethal violence. If an offender has strangled their partner once, the likelihood for attempted homicide increases sevenfold (Strack & Gwinn, 2001).

These alarming figures highlight a desperate need for change. We are calling for just sentencing that matches the severity of the offense and reflects the immense physical and psychological damage caused by it.
