I am a resident of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur, Philippines and I have personally witnessed the alarming disregard for proper waste disposal in our community. Some people in our society do not practice responsible waste management which is causing harm to our environment and health.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), improper waste disposal can lead to serious environmental problems such as soil degradation, water contamination, and air pollution. It also poses risks to public health as it can be a breeding ground for disease-causing organisms.

The Philippine Environmental Code mandates that all citizens must dispose of their wastes properly. However, this law is not strictly enforced in many areas including ours. This lackadaisical approach towards waste management needs to change.

We are calling on the local government unit of Marihatag to implement stricter regulations regarding proper waste disposal practices. We ask them to provide adequate facilities for waste segregation and recycling, conduct regular inspections on households' compliance with these rules, impose penalties on violators, and launch awareness campaigns about the importance of responsible waste management.
