Implement Strict Penalties for Youths Involved in Vyleen White's Tragic Death
The issue
Vyleen White, a beloved grandmother from Redbank Plains QLD, Australia, tragically lost her life due to the actions of local youths. This incident has left our community in shock and mourning. We believe that justice must be served and that the individuals responsible should face severe penalties.
The Australian Institute of Criminology reports an increase in youth crime rates over recent years (AIC). This trend is alarming and requires immediate attention. The tragic death of Vyleen White is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address this issue.
The 2021-22 Queensland Crime Report showed a 13.7 percent increase in the number of children aged 10 to 17 being proceeded against by police, compared to the previous year. The total number of youth offenders reached 52,742, the highest number in 10 years.
In most of the other states and territories, Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows the youth offending rates have trended downward over the past decade. From 2020-21 to 2021-22, these rates have either remained steady or decreased in most states and territories. Only the Northern Territory showed a larger increase of 13 percent.
We call upon our local government representatives and law enforcement agencies to ensure that those involved in this heinous act are held accountable. We also urge them to review current policies on youth crime, with an emphasis on implementing stricter penalties as a deterrent for such acts.
By signing this petition, you will be supporting justice for Vyleen White and contributing towards making Redbank Plains a safer place for all its residents. Every single one of us deserve to have the freedom to go to the shops, and go about our day, without the worry of not returning home. We all deserve to make it home to our families.
