Implement Strict Penalties for Smoking on Public Beaches

The Issue

As a beach lover, I cannot tell you the frustration and dismay felt when a day at the beautiful sandy coastline is ruined by the sight of cigarette butts lying around, or worse, your child picking them up in their innocent games. It's not just about the unsightly litter; it's also about the harmful smoke carried by the wind into the faces of everyone nearby. Good families should not have to worry about their children getting exposed to tobacco smoke on what should be a fun day at the beach.

Studies show that cigarette butts are the most common waste product found during beach cleanups globally, contributing up to 60% of all washed up trash (source: Environmental Protection Agency). Not only are these discarded cigarette butts an environmental hazard, but they are also a public health concern, contributing to secondhand smoke exposure.

Therefore, we urgently need local authorities to implement a ban on smoking cigarettes on public beaches, accompanied by harsh penalties for those who do not respect this rule. This is necessary not just to maintain cleanliness and beauty of our beloved beaches, but also to protect citizens - especially children - from exposure to harmful secondhand smoke.

Help us all enjoy cleaner, healthier, and more pleasant beach days. Sign our petition to advocate for the strict penalties for smoking on public beaches.
