Every day, drivers across Orange County, CA experience road frustration due to the dual issues of texting while driving and improper use of fast lanes. Texting while driving is not only illegal, but it's extremely dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2019 alone, distracted driving, including texting while driving, was reported in crashes that killed 3,142 people – a 10% increase from 2018. On the other hand, drivers who camp out in the fast lane add to this danger by impeding the flow of traffic and causing unnecessary road rage. Currently, California law stipulates that any vehicle which is proceeding at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction should be driven in the right-hand lane. Therefore, violators of such laws should be apprehended and penalized. Methods utilizing technology to capture photos/speeds or programs where passengers can submit license plates photos and or videos of the violators could be used to enforce this.
