The Issue

My name is [Your Name], and I am a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) working in a long-term care facility. Each day, I witness the challenges faced by my colleagues and myself as we strive to provide quality care for our residents. However, with a staff-to-resident ratio of one CNA to fifty residents, fulfilling every need becomes an insurmountable task. We are overburdened and exhausted, and our residents deserve better.

Currently, there is no mandated staff-to-resident ratio in many long-term care facilities, leading to dangerous understaffing levels. According to the National Institute on Aging, adequate staff levels are crucial for maintaining the health, safety, and well-being of elderly residents. This lack of regulation means CNAs like me are stretched too thin, resulting in compromised care—residents' needs go unmet, increasing their risk of falls, neglect, and even hospitalization.

A reasonable staff-to-resident ratio is not just beneficial but essential. Evidence suggests that facilities with appropriate staffing levels have residents with improved health outcomes, lower incidences of pressure ulcers, and reduced rates of hospital readmissions. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services highlight that while each facility's needs may differ, minimum standards are necessary to ensure quality and safe care.

Sadly, the reality is grim for many CNAs. According to a study published by the National Academies Press, overburdened staff often experience high levels of burnout and job dissatisfaction. This environment not only jeopardizes resident care but also affects the personal well-being of the caregivers themselves. By implementing staff-to-resident ratios, we can create a more supportive and sustainable working environment, reducing turnover rates and enhancing the caliber of care provided.

We urge the state to legislate and enforce a mandatory staff-to-resident ratio in long-term care facilities. This step is vital to ensuring the safety and health of some of our most vulnerable citizens. Our elders deserve dignity, respect, and the assurance that their needs will be met consistently and compassionately.

Please join me in advocating for a change that will safeguard the well-being of both residents and caregivers in long-term care facilities. Your signature can bring us one step closer to achieving the quality of care our elderly community rightfully deserves.
