The Issue

On a quiet afternoon, a speeding driver, traveling over 60 miles per hour, struck a goose right in front of me on Prospect Road, Centerport, an area renowned for its serene beauty and wildlife. Faced with the aftermath of this tragic incident, I rushed to the nearest rehab center, only to be told there was no choice but to euthanize the injured bird. This event was not an isolated one; merely a week ago, two other geese were found lifeless on the opposite side of Mill Pond.

For the past two years, I've lived in Centerport anticipating this exact situation, hoping against hope it would never come to pass. Our beloved neighborhood, which should be a sanctuary for wildlife and a safe haven for families, children, and outdoor enthusiasts, has become perilous due to reckless speeding.

We've all admired how nearby communities like Asharoken in Northport have transformed their roads into safer corridors by enforcing strict speed limits. Drivers there hesitate to exceed 29 mph due to effective deterrents. It's time for Centerport to adopt similar measures to protect our community and its precious wildlife.

Envision Prospect Road and CenterShore Road where families can walk, bike, and enjoy the outdoors without the looming fear of speed-induced accidents. Imagine children playing safely near their homes, birdwatchers capturing moments of tranquility without the distressing scenes of injured wildlife.

Implementing speed control measures such as speed bumps, clear signage, and possibly increased law enforcement presence could drastically reduce instances of speeding, making our roads safer for all.

By signing this petition, you stand with us to demand immediate action from local authorities. We urge them to prioritize the safety of Prospect Road and CenterShore Road for our children, families, and wildlife. Together, we can cultivate an environment where everyone can enjoy the peaceful beauty of Centerport safely and without fear.

Sign this petition and help us make a change for a safer, more humane neighborhood.
