Implement Solar Canopies Over Outdoor Parking Lots at New Canaan High School

The Issue

The idea is simple but powerful – turn outdoor parking lots in our community into active producers of clean, green solar power. Installing solar canopies/farms over these lots can help generate renewable energy for public facilities like municipal buildings and streetlights. This would not only reduce the town’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources but would also promote sustainability and contribute to lowering energy costs. By tapping into the sunlight that falls on these spaces every day, we could generate a significant amount of electricity. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, utility-scale solar photovoltaic power stations produced 96.1 terawatt-hours (TWh), 2.4% of total U.S electricity in 2020. Emission equivalent of solar power from one parking lot can remove 55 cars off the road each year (source: Green Energy Park). Furthermore, this initiative would also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a greener future. By signing our petition, you are not only advocating for an effective use of public spaces but also championing the broader cause of environmental sustainability. Stand with us in our mission to reshape New Canaan into a leading example of green initiatives and innovation. Sign our petition today.
