The Issue

Every time I get behind the wheel, I am filled with apprehension about the possibility of encountering a drunk driver. As a responsible driver who values not only my safety but also the safety of others on the road, I am deeply concerned about the number of intoxicated individuals who leave bars and attempt to drive home. The potential risks associated with drunk driving are far too immense to ignore, and that is why it is crucial that we take action to prevent these tragedies.

Drunk driving is a leading cause of accidents and fatalities on our roads, contributing to thousands of deaths each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2020 alone, alcohol-impaired driving accounted for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. These statistics are not just numbers; they represent lives lost and families shattered.

We have the power to change this devastating trend by implementing mandatory sobriety checks at the exits of bars. By conducting these checks, we can deter intoxicated patrons from getting behind the wheel, thereby reducing the number of drunk driving incidents. Bars could be required to employ qualified personnel who can conduct breathalyzer tests and evaluate patrons’ levels of intoxication before they depart. If a patron is found to be over the legal limit, they can be encouraged to use alternative transportation options such as taxis, rideshares, or designated drivers.

Moreover, partnering with local transportation companies can provide incentives for patrons to choose safer options to get home. Offering discounts or vouchers for rideshare services can be an attractive alternative to driving impaired. Bar owners and local authorities can work together to develop strategies and programs that prioritize public safety while maintaining respect for the business owner's operations.

It is time to take a stand against drunk driving by adopting proactive measures that protect lives. I invite you to join me in urging local governments and community leaders to require sobriety checks at bar exits. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone and foster a culture of responsibility.

Please sign this petition to call for the implementation of sobriety checks at bar exits and help prevent drunk driving and its devastating consequences. Your support can save lives and create a safer community for us all.
