IMPLEMENT SEX EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES NOW! — DECREASE TEENAGE PREGNANCY RATE

The Issue

According to the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey, one in every ten young Filipino women aged 15 to 19 has begun childbearing: 8% are already mothers, and another 2% are pregnant with their first child. Among young adult women aged 20 to 24, 43% are already mothers, and 4% are expecting their first child.

Early pregnancy and m According otherhood differ according to education level, wealth quintile, and region. It is more common in young adult females aged 15 to 24 with less education than in those with a higher education. Early childbearing is also more prevalent in Caraga (38%) and Cagayan Valley (37%), compared to other regions. The proportion of young adult women who have started having children is higher among poor households than among wealthier households.

Sexual activity begins before the age of 18 is more common among young adult women with less education and those from lower-income families. Over 40% of young adult women with some elementary education reported having their first intimate sexual act at the age of 18, compared to only 7% of those with a college education. Similarly, 36 percent of young adult women in the lowest wealth quintile had their first intimate sexual act before the age of 18, compared to only 10 percent of those in the highest wealth quintile. The proportion varies by region, ranging from 11% in the Cordillera Administrative Region to 27% in Davao. The proportion of young adult women reporting their first intimate sexual act before the age of 18 is 22 percent in rural areas and 17 percent in urban areas.
