The Issue

As a Chem Lab student at Delcastle Technical High School in Wilmington, DE, I am acutely aware of the severe health and safety hazards we face every day. Dealing with an array of corrosive and dangerous chemicals is part of our curriculum, and currently, the 11th and 12th grade students are being grouped together. This one-size-fits-all approach creates unnecessary risks and often hinders our learning experience.

The exposure to such substances without proper differentiation between beginners and advanced students increases the likelihood of accidents. A seasoned student might be ready to handle complex and volatile reactions, while a beginner may still be mastering basic safety protocols. This disparity in readiness creates an environment where safety can be compromised.

By implementing separate grades or levels within the Chemical Labs, Delcastle can create a safer and more conducive learning environment. Beginner students would benefit from more structured and supervised sessions focusing on foundational skills, while more experienced students could advance to complex experiments without being held back.

This proposed change would not only enhance safety but also ensure all students receive the appropriate level of instruction and practical experience. Evidence from educational research shows that tiered learning environments improve both safety and educational outcomes. It's vital for Delcastle to adopt a model that aligns with these findings for the well-being and academic growth of its students.

Delcastle Technical High School has long been a beacon of excellence in education, and by taking this step, it can continue to lead by example in the commitment to its students' safety and success.

Please join me in calling on Delcastle's administration to review and implement a system that separates Chemical Laboratory grades. Help us make our laboratories a safe space for learning by signing this petition.
