Implement School Holidays for Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha

Implement School Holidays for Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha
The Issue
As a diligent Muslim student, I encounter a significant challenge every year during Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha, essential festivals in Islam. These occasions, which should be joyful celebrations, are often marred by the burden of school commitments, which detract from the core essence of these special days. It's hard for us to fully immerse ourselves in the festivities when we're saddled with substantial amounts of homework and the anticipated stress of a potential dip in academic performance as a result of this. Celebrating our faith shouldn't come with such harsh consequences.
Moreover, recognizing these key Islamic celebrations as official school holidays contributes to fostering a more inclusive, diverse, and holistically understanding educational environment that respects and acknowledges the religious sentiments of all students. Over 3.45 million Muslims live in the United States according to Pew Research Center; it is high time for our educational institutions to respect and cater to our religious events.
It is also important to note that multiple religious holidays are celebrated throughout the year, such as Yom Kippur, Christmas, and Rosh Hashanah. I do believe that Eid deserves to be one of these holidays. Eid is as important as any other holiday; it is something that should be recognized, especially since other religious holidays are celebrated and given off.
Several school districts in New Jersey have already started closing for Eid, including Fair Lawn, Boonton, East Brunswick, Fanwood & Scotch Plains, Holmdel, Livingston, Warren, and Watchung Borough. Nearby districts like Mount Olive also observe the holiday.
Therefore, I appeal for the implementation of school holidays whenever Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha fall on a school day. This change will not just benefit Muslim students but will also promote cultural awareness and religious sensitivity among all students. Please sign this petition to advance religious inclusivity in our schools.
