As concerned parents living in Pheasant Hills and Claiborne, we have witnessed several near misses involving children crossing the road walking to LIS/LMS and back home. My own child was one of them. This is a frightening and unacceptable situation. Every day, our children are put at unnecessary risk due to a lack of crossing guards at these high-traffic intersections. 

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, thousands of pedestrians are hit and killed every year- 141 of those deaths are kids younger than 13 years old.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School states that child pedestrian accidents can decrease by up to 23% with the implementation of crossing guards. We need to bring this important safety measure to our community. 

School crossing guards provide essential safety assistance at risky intersections nearby schools. Their presence makes drivers more aware of the need to slow down and adhere to traffic laws, especially during peak school hours when children are most likely to be crossing streets.

For the safety and peace of mind of our children, parents and community, we call upon the relevant authorities to implement school crossing guards at the intersections of Pheasant Hills Drive, and Preakness Lane and Arcaro Drive, on South Lebanon Road.
