I recently slipped on ice while making my way to school, resulting in a painful back injury. The incident made me realize the significant risks posed to all of us when conditions are icy and schools remain open. The danger isn't just limited to physical injuries but extends to health concerns as well, as exposure to icy conditions can lead to illnesses.

In New York City, students and employees of the school district face treacherous conditions on their way to and from school during icy days. It is essential to prioritize their safety by re-evaluating current policies and implementing procedures that ensure schools close when icy conditions pose a risk.

Currently, the decision to close schools during inclement weather is sporadic and often delayed. Implementing a clear and proactive policy for such weather will significantly decrease the chance of accidents and minimize disruptions to education by providing a safer environment for students and staff.

Statistics show that slip and fall accidents dramatically increase during icy weather. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports thousands of injuries nationwide every year due to icy conditions. This is an unnecessary risk when simple preventative measures can be taken.

By setting specific criteria for school closures based on weather forecasts and ice conditions, the school district can hold operations only when it's safe for everyone involved. Schools in regions with harsh winter weather have successfully adopted similar policies, and it's time for New York City to follow their lead.
