Implement Safety Measures on the Queen Elizabeth 2 Bridge to Prevent Suicides

Implement Safety Measures on the Queen Elizabeth 2 Bridge to Prevent Suicides
The Issue
As a daily user of the Dartford crossing, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of suicides from the Queen Elizabeth 2 Bridge. The aftermath not only causes traffic congestion for miles around but also deeply affects individuals - from family and friends of jumpers to innocent bystanders who witness these tragic events, and drivers stuck in hours-long traffic jams.
The QE2 Bridge is an essential artery for transportation, connecting thousands daily. However, its lack of safety measures has turned it into a hotspot for suicide attempts. According to Samaritans, there were 5284 suicides in England in 2022 alone (source: Samaritans Suicide Statistics Report). While it's difficult to determine how many occur at specific locations like bridges or high buildings, we know that physical barriers can help reduce such incidents.
In cities worldwide where similar measures have been implemented on bridges known as suicide hotspots - such as Toronto's Bloor Street Viaduct or San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge - evidence shows that installing barriers can decrease suicide rates by more than half (source: Journal of Public Health Policy).
We urge those responsible for managing the QE2 bridge – Highways England and Connect Plus Services – to take immediate action by installing safety fences or other effective deterrents. This is not just about easing traffic; this is about saving lives and preventing unnecessary trauma.
Please sign this petition if you believe that no life should be lost due to lack of preventive measures on our infrastructure.
