The Issue

While picking my children up from Richland School of Academic Arts in Mansfield, Ohio, I've almost been in two car accidents this year. My wife has also had to avoid an accident while dropping them off, and just recently, there was another accident during the morning drop-off. It's evident that people are driving entirely too fast through the area, often exceeding the already high 35 mph speed limit. We don't want a tragedy to happen before our leadership takes action on this issue.

For over a decade, Richland School of Academic Arts has been an integral part of our community, providing top-notch education and fostering future leaders. However, the lack of appropriate traffic safety measures around the school has become a glaring safety hazard. Despite the school's standing, there is no reduced speed zone, no school signage, and no traffic light warning drivers to slow down. This negligence puts the lives of our children, staff, and community members at risk every single day.

Children are our most precious assets, and their safety should be a top priority. The current speed limit and lack of warning lights or school signage do not adequately protect them or others traveling to and from the school. Speeding vehicles pose a severe threat as they blind corners and cross busy intersections, making it a dangerous environment for everyone involved.

We must urge the Mansfield city authorities and the local school district to implement critical traffic safety measures. These should include the establishment of a reduced speed zone specifically during school hours, the installation of prominent school signage, and the implementation of a traffic light system to warn drivers to slow down.

Statistics consistently show that reduced speed zones near schools significantly decrease the likelihood of accidents, subsequently keeping our children and community safer. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, lowering speed limits in school zones and adding appropriate signage can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 45%.

There should be no controversy over ensuring the safest possible environment for our kids. It's time for the local governance to prioritize the wellbeing of our school children over zoning constraints. This issue transcends politics—it's about protecting lives. We urge our community and policymakers to fight for the safety of Richland School of Academic Arts. Let's not wait for a tragedy before we take a stand.
