In 1995, my brother tragically lost his life at a railroad crossing that was not gated. The area was heavily surrounded by foliage on both sides of the track, which runs east and west, making visibility particularly difficult when the sun is directly in line. This personal tragedy has highlighted a major safety issue that needs immediate attention.

Across the country, there are thousands of railroad crossings without gates or lights to warn drivers of an approaching train. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, nearly half of all collisions occur at crossings with inadequate warning devices. This lack of safety measures puts countless lives at risk every day.

We urge our local and national government officials to implement mandatory safety gates at all railroad crossings. By doing so, we can significantly reduce the number of accidents and fatalities caused by trains each year.
