The Issue

For a considerable time, I have been a devoted season ticket holder in the East Stand Block EU-J at Pride Park Stadium, the home of Derby County Football Club. Amongst the ambiance of adrenaline-infused matches, I, like many others around me, take pleasure in standing in our seats. Recently, I was contacted by the club along with fellow supporters to be reminded that our stand is supposed to be for seated enjoyment only. I expressed my concern that while home fans are asked to remain seated, away fans are visibly allowed to stand – an unfair treatment in my view. This was acknowledged and told to be under review.

In response, they considered the installation of safe standing bars, but only for the benefit of the away fans. In the interest of fairness and equality, this decision should include all fans, not just those visiting. The introduction of safe standing areas has been trailed in major stadiums across the UK, with successful outcomes. The Sports Grounds Safety Authority suggests that safe standing areas can coexist with seated areas without compromising on safety, and reports positive feedback from fans (source: Sports Grounds Safety Authority). Equal provision of standing areas for home and away fans would promote fairness.

Therefore, I am calling upon the management of Derby County Football Club to consider extending the facility to stand safely to all fans, including those in East Stand Upper Block EU-J. The love for football involves shared experiences, fair treatment and, most importantly, safe enjoyment. Let us stand united. I request the supporters and residents of Derby, UK, to sign this petition to require the club to implement safe standing areas for all fans at Pride Park Stadium.
