Implement safe cycling pathways in Lahore

The Issue

Lahore, a bustling metropolis of over 11 million people, suffers from increasingly hazardous levels of air pollution, traffic congestion, and limited green spaces. These issues not only impact the environment but also pose severe health risks to its inhabitants. One practical and sustainable solution to address these concerns is the development of safe cycling pathways throughout the city.

Cycling is an efficient mode of transport that reduces carbon emissions, lowers traffic congestion, and promotes a healthier lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization, over 60,000 people in Pakistan die annually due to outdoor air pollution. Creating dedicated cycling lanes can significantly reduce pollution in Lahore, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

Currently, the lack of safe cycling infrastructure discourages residents from using bicycles, despite their benefits. By constructing well-planned, safe cycling pathways, Lahore can join global cities that prioritize sustainable transport, demonstrating leadership in combating climate change.

A detailed study, conducted by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute, points out that every kilometre cycled instead of driven saves approximately 150 grams of carbon dioxide emissions. With Lahore's considerable distance coverage, this could result in a significant reduction in overall pollution. Furthermore, cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen have shown that investing in cycling infrastructure not only improves air quality but also boosts the local economy, attracts tourism, and enhances the city's appeal.

We urge the local government and city planners to take immediate action by:
1. Allocating budget and resources specifically for the development of cycling lanes.
2. Designing a comprehensive city-wide plan that integrates cycling paths with existing and planned public transportation networks.
3. Implementing awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to adopt cycling as a primary mode of transport.
4. Collaborating with international urban planners who have successfully implemented similar initiatives.

Join us in pushing for a greener, healthier Lahore. Together, we can make a difference by advocating for safe cycling pathways. Sign this petition and help bring about the necessary change for our city and its people.
