Implement Road Safety Measures in Bragtown, Durham County, N.C.

The Issue

I have been a resident witness and community advocate for the Bragtown neighborhood for many years. Unfailingly, I have observed the dire road safety hazards, especially around areas like Midland Terrace and Dearborn Drive & Thelma Street. The streets have poor visibility, are extremely narrow, and cope with a constant increase in traffic due to development in the area. The situation is incredibly grim as one fatal accident, resulting from a vehicle sliding into the creek, has already occurred. Very recently, another vehicle had to be pulled out from the same creek. Pedestrians, including children and the handicapped with limited or no sidewalk access, dangerously navigate these roads every day.

The issue of road safety, particularly the need for guard rails and safe crossings, has been a persistent plea in various official meetings by the Bragtown community. It is high time that the North Carolina Department of Transportation and other Durham County Officials pay attention to this urgent call to arms.

Roads are not just conduits for vehicles - they are lifelines for communities and thus need to be safe for everyone. With the reported history of accidents and near-misses, it would be negligence to continue to ignore the critical need for guard rails and improved road safety measures in the concerned areas.

We urge the relevant authorities to act now and invest in safety improvements, such as guard rails installation and enhancement of sidewalk access, to ensure the roads are safer for both pedestrians and vehicles. Save lives, prevent accidents, and uphold community integrity. Pledge protection to Bragtown - sign the petition now.
