The Issue

My name is Fiona and I live in  Ayr, United Kingdom, I am a passionate protector of our local parks, and a fervent dog-lover. My dog, Bailey, like many others in our community, suffers greatly each firework season. I share this concern with many fellow pet owners, who see their furry friends distressed, anxious, and at various health risks due to uncontrolled firework activities.

Dog-health experts have stated that excessive noise and flashes from fireworks can lead to increased heart rates in dogs, risking heart failure in severe cases. Bailey is at risk of such a condition, and I am worried about other dogs facing similar threats. The current scenario of unrestricted fireworks in our town not only threatens our pets but threatens the peace of our community.
I am also hugely passionate about people who experience sensory sensitivities or struggle with expected noise, children with autism, adults with PTSD and older people with dementia are all frightened at firework season and this anxiety does not only impact them on the night but for the days and weeks following.

As such, we propose the implementation of restrictions on fireworks in key areas of Ayr, specifically in park areas. Police Scotland and the local authority will have a sense of the areas where they can provide reasonable cover and may include Ayr North as a starting point.  This will serve as a test to discern the impact such restrictions might have on our  dog's health and community well-being.

We request the local authority  to take hear of our pleas, and instate regulations that can truly make a difference. This is not just about Bailey, but about an entire community striving to ensure the safety and health of their pets. We need to change the norm. Sign our petition to move towards a quieter, safer, and happier Ayr.
