Implement rent caps in Newfoundland & Labrador

Implement rent caps in Newfoundland & Labrador
The Issue
Newfoundland & Labrador is now the only province in Atlantic Canada without rent caps.
Meanwhile, the cost of living keeps climbing while wages stay nearly the same.
Here’s what renters are facing across our province:
- Average rent increase since 2020: +22%
- Average wage growth: +8%
- Electric heating bills: up 25–40% in winter
- Grocery costs: up 16%
- St. John’s vacancy rate: ~1.3% (anything below 3% is considered a housing crisis)
Families, seniors, students, and workers are being priced out of their homes. Not because they did anything wrong – but because there are no limits on how high rent can be raised.
This is not sustainable.
This is not fair.
This is not healthy for our communities.
We are calling on the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador to implement temporary rent caps of up to 2% per year, to remain in place until the vacancy rate reaches at least 3%, the stability threshold used in housing policy.
This is a reasonable, time-limited, and balanced measure that:
- Prevents sudden rent spikes
- Keeps families in their communities
- Reduces housing insecurity and displacement
- Gives government time to build more housing supply
This is not about political parties.
You do not need to be NDP, Liberal, PC, Green, or anything at all to support this.
You only need to believe this:
Affordable housing is a right, not a privilege.
No one should live one rent increase away from crisis.
If you or someone you care about rents in Newfoundland & Labrador – this matters to you.

We deserve a province where people can afford to live in the homes they already live in.
