Implement Regulation of Conveyancing and Solicitor Fees

The Issue

From a personal perspective, I am in the midst of purchasing a house, already a costly endeavor. Shockingly, I found no controls or regulations over conveyancing and solicitor fees. How can such a lack of oversight be permitted? This system is not structured in favor of the public. There should be standard pricing systems, as well as firm costs for variable factors that make each situation unique.

The task of preparing for house ownership is already daunting and the fluid nature of these fees only exacerbates the stress. To make matters worse, every quote seems to come with hidden, additional expenses.

Data from the HomeOwners Alliance suggests this is a widespread problem, with 1 in 5 homebuyers paying more than expected due to hidden fees. This is not how the largest expense in most people's lives should be managed. Lack of transparency and the potential for exploitation due to absence of regulation is unfair and needs to be addressed promptly.

We call on our policymakers to take this issue seriously and institute regulations on conveyancing and solicitor fees that will protect consumers, provide transparency, and promote fairness in the real estate market.
