Implement Recess for Middle School Students

Implement Recess for Middle School Students
The Issue
I'm a middle school student who truly misses the joy of recess. Contrary to popular belief, older kids also need a break during the school day just as much as the younger ones. These moments of unstructured play not only help us unwind but also foster our social skills and creativity. According to a study funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, recess plays a crucial role in social development and builds cognitive skills such as focus and attentiveness in class (Barros, Silver, and Stein, 2009). Moreover, the American Academy of Pediatrics has specifically emphasized the importance of recess for children's cognitive performance and physical health (Council On School Health, 2013).
Despite these facts, many middle schools across the country have either shortened or completely eradicated recess under the illusion that this time could be better used academically. This decision is notably affecting our mental well-being and academic performance. It's time to change this for the better. We strongly believe that the re-introduction of recess will make a positive difference in middle schoolers' lives, including my own – it will make us excited to go to school, inviting an enhanced atmosphere of learning and productivity.
Please acknowledge our plea for help and support us by signing this petition. Let's bring recess back to middle schools nationwide.
