Implement Proportional Representation for a True Democracy

The Issue

As an individual who cherishes democracy and justice, the current outdated voting system deeply concerns me. It allows for misrepresentation and fails to give all political minorities a fair chance, hindering true democratic values. For the sake of our future generations, we firmly request a shift to a Proportional Representation (PR) system.

In a PR system, the percentage of votes a party receives will directly mirror the percentage of seats they get in the legislature. According to the Electoral Reform Society, nearly 90% of developed democracies use some form of PR, including Germany, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. Our shift towards proportional representation will align us with these democratic countries, ensure equity and inclusivity, and foster broader political debates and diversity.

But this is not only about international standards. Our current system has, on multiple occasions, failed to provide accurate representation. For instance, in the 2015 UK General Election, 3.9 million voters voted for UKIP, yet the party won just a single seat. This stark disparity between the number of votes and seats clearly undermines democratic principles.

For these reasons, it's time to discard our outmoded First-Past-The-Post system and embrace Proportional Representation. Doing so will ensure that every vote counts, reflects the genuine public consensus, and helps shape a true democracy for generations to come. Please sign the petition to make this critical change in our voting system.
