Implement Priority Control for Traffic Lights in Lafayette

Implement Priority Control for Traffic Lights in Lafayette
The Issue
I'm a Lyft driver in Lafayette, LA, and every day I spend over an hour sitting at traffic lights, most of which is during non-peak hours. While it's understandable to experience delays during rush hours, I find myself waiting just as long—or longer—at different times of the day. The lights often turn green at intersections to allow nonexistent cars to cross, holding the green light for an entire cycle "just in case." This inefficiency affects not only my daily routine but also the hundreds of others who drive these routes regularly.
It’s time for Lafayette to implement a more efficient traffic light system that utilizes advanced radar detection or cameras to ensure smoother traffic flow. Cities across the country have successfully adopted intelligent traffic systems to reduce congestion and travel times. Lafayette can benefit too.
The proposal is simple: implement priority control for traffic lights on major roads in our city. Priority control would keep traffic lights green until there’s cross traffic, improving fluidity on the roads. Critical roads like Evangeline Throughway from Willow to Pinhook, Pinhook from Evangeline Throughway to Youngsville Highway, Kaliste Saloom from Ambassador to Pinhook/Throughway, Ambassador from Kaliste Saloom to Evangeline Throughway, W Congress from Ambassador to University, and University from I-10 to ULL, are all in dire need of this update.
Implementing this change would not only save valuable time for drivers but also reduce fuel wastage and lower emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment. Let's urge the city authorities to consider this essential upgrade for the betterment of daily commutes and the overall quality of life for the residents of Lafayette.
Sign this petition to demand that the city of Lafayette prioritizes the efficient use of traffic lights, improving our roads and easing our commutes.
