The Issue

Growing up going to the beach every summer, I've always appreciated the ocean and the vibrant life it supports. Every trip fueled my belief that the ocean should be a sanctuary, not just entertainment for people. Unfortunately, our oceans are increasingly becoming polluted with plastics and impacting marine life.

Plastic pollution is a deadly hazard. Studies have shown that over 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, choking marine life and disrupting ecosystems. Sea turtles, dolphins, and countless fish species mistake plastic for food, leading to severe harm and death. This catastrophe isn't limited to the animals; it extends to human communities that rely on the ocean for livelihood and recreation.

A powerful solution is the implementation of the "polluter pays" policy in the Town of Hempstead. This policy would place the financial burden of pollution on producers and consumers who create waste, incentivizing them to find sustainable solutions and reduce plastic usage drastically. Other regions worldwide have seen the effectiveness of similar policies in curbing waste and encouraging sustainable methods of plastic.

Join me in urging our community leaders and policymakers to take decisive action. Sign the petition to implement the polluter pay policy in the Town of Hempstead and help preserve our natural heritage for future generations. Let’s make our waters safe for every creature that calls them home, including ourselves.
