Implement Personal Finance as a Curriculum Requirement at Millersville University

Implement Personal Finance as a Curriculum Requirement at Millersville University

The Issue

Over the past few weeks, we have been assessing the overall financial literacy among undergraduate students enrolled at Millersville University. We have collected data showing the severe lack of personal finance knowledge among students. Not only do they lack personal finance knowledge including tax and insurance concepts, but they also lack awareness of resources available to them through the university. This lack of knowledge has negative implications on one's future, limiting their ability to utilize and manage money. The topics covered in a personal finance course include taxes, insurance, the buying process, budgeting, planning, and establishing retirement funds. Each of these topics are crucial in order for someone to lead a comfortable life. Without being provided with this knowledge, the well-being of college students emerging in the real world is at risk.

We currently offer a personal finance course as an elective at Millersville, but it bears no value to many students, only having the designation of a 200-level course. Not only are students unaware of the class, but they also fail to see an incentive to take it. We are calling on the university and department senators to add a personal finance course as a curriculum requirement for all students, regardless of their anticipated degree. This class is valuable for every student's livelihood, providing them with knowledge that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Now, more than ever, is the time to act. The university is currently revising its general education program, so it is the best time to implement a new requirement. It has been 20 years since the university revised its general education curriculum. Thus, this opportunity is rare, so it must be fully taken advantage of. With your help, we may be able to ensure that Millersville is acting in the best interest of its students. We ask that you participate in this change by signing this petition, pledging your support and desire to see Millersville implement a required personal finance course.
