Implement Pedestrian Crossing Near Botley Recreation Ground for Safer School Walks
The Issue
As a healthcare professional working in intensive care, I've witnessed the unimaginable horror of children being struck by speeding cars. This situation is especially worrying around Botley Recreation Ground in Southampton, UK, where children often cross the main road to go to school. Due to the lack of a dedicated pedestrian crossing, this road presents a significant risk to our youngest and most vulnerable citizens. Rather alarmingly, in the UK, there are more than 5,000 cases of pedestrians aged under 15 being injured in road traffic accidents every year, according to the Department for Transport (DfT). The need to ensure safe access to our green and recreational spaces is of utmost importance. Pedestrian crossings have been proven to substantially decrease the risk of vehicular accidents, preventing speeding cars from going unchecked. The safety and welfare of our children are non-negotiable. Therefore, we express an urgent need to implement a pedestrian crossing by Botley Recreation Ground. Doing so will not only make the walk to school safer for our children but send a clear message: our community stands united for safety. I encourage you to sign this petition, and together let’s put the safety of our children first.
