Implement "Octavia's Law" to Hold Witnesses of Child Abuse Accountable
The Issue
For four-year-old Octavia Aquino, Father's Day of 2024 brought a tragic end to her young life at the hands of her mom's 16 year old boyfriend. He was someone she should have been able to trust. Sweet and innocent Octavia was also in the presence of roommates who saw her suffering but did nothing. Like far too many others, Octavia was let down by those who should have protected her, especially her mother. If there had been swift action to report the visible signs of abuse, her life could have been saved. Instead no one said or did anything to help her until after it was too late. After Octavia was found unresponsive roommates told the police they had noticed she was acting strange the day before and had several bruises around her neck and bite marks on her arm. Octavia had head and neck trauma that caused massive brain swelling, and she died slowly overnight. This unbelievable and heartbreaking personal experience leads me to call for "Octavia's Law."
"Octavia's Law" would legally obligate anyone who witnesses any form of child abuse or neglect to report it promptly to the police and Child Protective Services (CPS). To be silent in the face of such horrors should be classified as criminal negligence., and anyone who does so would be arrested and charged. Children often cannot be expected to advocate for themselves in abusive situations; it's our responsibility as adults, as a society, to stand for them when they can't protect themselves. To speak up when their tiny voices can not be heard. To show them they are loved and don't deserve to be harmed by anyone, ever!!!
In the U.S., nearly 700,000 children are victims of abuse and neglect each year, according to the National Children's Alliance. Yet, the stark reality is that these reported cases are often just the tip of the iceberg, with countless instances going unnoticed, unreported, or ignored. It's time we put a spotlight on this silent epidemic sweeping our nation and implement "Octavia's Law" to make sure no other child falls through the cracks.
Join us in urging legal institutions to recognize and support "Octavia's Law." It's time to stop future tragedies by holding accountable those who witness child abuse or neglect and choose silence over action. Had those roommates spoken up and called 911 my grandbaby could of gotten medical attention right away and probably would still be alive today. Please sign this petition today and make a stand against child abuse. Let's make sure Octavia's death was not in vain, and her legacy will be a safer world for all children.
